Emergency services responded promptly to a chemical leak at a drinks production factory on Bristol Road in Bridgwater, Somerset, late Thursday evening, July 31. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a liquid ammonia leak at 6:50 pm and immediately dispatched crews from Bridgwater and Nether Stowey to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters, including an Environmental Protection unit from Taunton, assessed the situation and quickly evacuated the factory to ensure everyone’s safety. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The leak originated in the plant room, where crews isolated the affected area and continuously monitored the ammonia vessel’s pressure to prevent escalation.
Firefighters equipped with six breathing apparatus and utilizing thermal imaging technology successfully controlled the leak. After securing the site, they handed the incident back to the factory owners to manage the aftermath.

The Avon and Somerset Police supported the operation by implementing road closures around the business park to facilitate emergency efforts and protect public safety. These closures were lifted by 10:45 pm the same evening, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.
A spokesperson from the fire service highlighted the professionalism and efficiency of the teams involved, noting the critical use of monitoring and safety equipment that helped bring the incident under control without any casualties.
