Major Bus Lane in Weston-super-Mare Closes as Key Junction Upgrades Begin

Starting today, January 28, a significant bus lane on Bristol Road in Weston-super-Mare, near the Food Warehouse, will close to all general traffic. This closure is part of a crucial junction improvement project in preparation for upcoming works on Queensway Junction scheduled for June.

Construction crews will focus on building a large underground chamber and rerouting utilities on the Bristol Road side of the junction. These necessary utility diversions are an integral part of the wider Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), which aims to enhance approximately 150 bus stops and shelters across the region.

Cllr Hugh Malyan, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasized the long-term benefits. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during this essential work. By completing these diversions now, we can avoid further disruptions later and maintain seamless digital connectivity for residents and businesses. Our goal is to create a safer, smoother, and more reliable junction for all who travel through this area.”

In parallel, upgrades at the Worle Transport Hub near McDonald’s will commence at the end of February, with a projected duration of around two months. During this time, the existing interchange will close, and outbound X service buses will temporarily relocate to the bus stop outside the Food Warehouse, located within the now-closed bus lane.

Additional planned works include constructing a retaining wall and modifying drainpipes near the Walford Avenue junction. These efforts, carried out away from the active carriageway, will prepare the site for the major Queensway improvement programme later this year.

Members of the public are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra travel time while these essential works are underway.
