Significant upgrade work will bring lane closures to the Lime Kiln Roundabout on the A38 between North Somerset and Bristol over the next six months. Scheduled to start on Monday, November 17, the improvement project is set to continue through May 2026, aiming to enhance traffic flow and public transport efficiency.
North Somerset Council announced that lane closures will affect all arms of the junction during most of the scheme, though access through the roundabout will be maintained throughout the duration.
The project includes the installation of new bus lanes, updated traffic signals, and a toucan crossing to improve pedestrian safety on the Colliters Way arm and the A38 Bristol Airport arm of the roundabout.

Hannah Young, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, emphasized the community-driven design process: “These final plans reflect extensive engagement with residents and passengers, and I’m grateful to everyone who participated in the early-year online consultation.
“We currently see between 13 and 16 scheduled buses passing through Lime Kiln Junction every hour, totaling more than 120,000 passenger journeys each month, and this number continues to grow.
“The Lime Kiln scheme offers comprehensive upgrades to the A38 that will expand road capacity, ease airport traffic, and enable buses to bypass congestion, improving both journey times and reliability.”
This project is funded by the UK government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). Beyond the junction improvements, the A38 corridor will benefit from enhancements including 150 upgraded bus stops, new transport hubs with comfortable seating, real-time bus information, and more affordable fares under the initiative.
North Somerset Council Leader Cllr Mike Bell highlighted the broader vision behind the BSIP: “Reliable and efficient bus services are essential for our community. BSIP provides an excellent opportunity to enhance transport standards and connectivity across the region.
“We are committed to ensuring North Somerset remains accessible and well-connected for all users, now and into the future.”
