M5 Van Driver Arrested on Suspicion of Drink and Drug Driving Following Collision with Passenger Bus

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving after a collision between a van and a passenger bus on the M5 motorway in Somerset.

Emergency services responded to the incident on Monday evening, November 27, at around 8 pm, between junctions 26 and 27. The crash involved a coach carrying approximately 35 passengers and a van.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that despite the collision, none of the passengers sustained any injuries following medical checks on the scene.

Devon and Cornwall Police reported the van driver was taken into custody on suspicion of operating the vehicle over the legal alcohol limit and being unfit to drive due to drug use. He has since been released under investigation while inquiries continue.

A police spokesperson stated: “Officers from Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing attended the collision on the M5 between junctions 26 and 27 on November 27. Fire and ambulance crews assisted and assessed everyone involved. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported.”
