Logan Smith, an 18-year-old from Weston-super-Mare, has been named as the victim of a fatal crash on the M5 motorway in Somerset. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, November 30, after Logan was Tasered by police moments before being struck by a vehicle on the carriageway.
According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), Logan had exited an ambulance stationed on the northbound side of the motorway, while being transported to hospital. Ambulance staff, concerned by his actions, called for police assistance when he entered the live motorway lane.
An officer soon arrived and tried to engage with Logan. Body-worn camera footage reviewed by the IOPC shows the officer discharged a Taser, causing Logan to fall to the ground. Shortly afterward, he was hit by a car traveling on the southbound carriageway and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The IOPC has launched an independent investigation into Avon and Somerset Police’s actions during the incident. The incident occurred just after 11pm, and those involved—including officers and ambulance personnel—are reported to be deeply affected and receiving support.
Tributes poured in on social media remembering Logan as an “amazing young lad.” Friends and community members described him as a kind and good-hearted individual whose loss leaves a significant void in their lives.
IOPC Director Derrick Campbell expressed condolences, saying, “My thoughts and sympathies are with Logan’s family and friends and everyone affected by this shocking and tragic incident. We are thoroughly investigating all circumstances, including the use of the Taser. We have conversed with the family to offer support and will continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
