M5 Speed Limit Reduced to 50mph Amid Extensive Roadworks Through Early 2026

Motorists using the M5 motorway in Devon and Somerset should prepare for a significant reduction in speed limits and ongoing disruption as extensive maintenance works continue until February 2026.

From Monday, October 26, a 50mph speed limit will be enforced around junction 26 near Wellington, affecting three narrow lanes in each direction. This restriction will remain in place until Thursday, February 19, between junctions 25 and 27. The southbound carriageway will see a similar 50mph limit from November 2 through to February 11.

The £5.9 million project led by National Highways focuses on critical infrastructure improvements including de-silting ditches, renewing gullies, resurfacing the road, replacing blocked drainage pipes and fittings, updating road markings, and conducting camera surveys and proofing. These works aim to enhance drainage, reduce flooding risks, and improve overall safety for drivers on this busy stretch of motorway.

Further disruptions are expected, with sections between junctions 28 and 30 currently closed for weeknight works on the southbound carriageway, anticipated to last until December. Numerous overnight lane closures and full closures are scheduled over the coming months, notably between junctions 25 and 27, with diversions in place via the A38 and A358.

Key closure dates include multiple overnight full closures throughout October 2025 to February 2026, with lane restrictions from 8 pm to 6 am on specified nights. Slip roads near junctions 29 and 30 will also face closures with single-lane running in place, and access to connecting routes like the A30 and A38 will be diverted to maintain traffic flow.

Drivers are urged to plan journeys carefully, adhere to posted speed limits, and follow diversion signage to ensure safety and minimize disruption during this critical maintenance period.
