A local scaffolding company near Junction 26 of the M5 has expressed concern over the three-month-long roadworks set to begin in June. The owners, Patrick and Carol Warren, fear that the temporary closure could have a devastating economic impact on their business and other local companies.
The roadworks, involving £5.7 million of improvements to the roundabout at Junction 26, are scheduled to commence on Friday, June 16, with the junction set to reopen on Tuesday, September 16. During this period, the road between Foxmoor Business Park in Wellington and the motorway will be closed, prompting worries about increased traffic and potential accidents on alternative routes.
The Warrens emphasized the challenges they anticipate, particularly in reaching their customers, stating that the closure could lead to a substantial loss of approximately £14,000 over the three-month period. They expressed frustration at the apparent confusion between Somerset Council and National Highways regarding responsibility for the road closures.

In response, Somerset Council attributed the roadworks to the need for essential improvements to the link road and motorway roundabout, stating that securing funding for the project from the government presented an opportunity that could not be missed.
The council acknowledged the difficulty in finding an ideal window for the works but emphasized the long-term benefits of completing the project. They highlighted the funding secured from the government and the cost-effectiveness of renewing the road in its entirety.
