The M5 motorway in Somerset has been closed in both directions for over 12 hours following a serious crash that occurred late Sunday night. The collision, which took place around 11 pm on November 30, has prompted an extensive closure between junctions 19, 20, and 21 while Avon and Somerset Police continue their investigations on site.
The northbound closure extends between junctions 21 (Weston-super-Mare) and 20 (Clevedon), while southbound traffic is affected between junctions 19 and 21. Emergency services advise motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes due to ongoing delays.
Drivers are currently being diverted through Bristol, with specific instructions to follow the designated road signs: the Solid Triangle symbol for one diversion route and the Hollow Circle for another. Notably, the Clean Air Charge in Bristol has been temporarily suspended to accommodate this diversion.

For southbound traffic, lighter vehicles are advised to travel south until junction 19, then take the A369 southeast towards Leigh Woods. From there, continue on the A370 southwest to Long Ashton, then proceed south on the A4174 and finally south on the A38 until reaching junction 22.
Travelers heading to and from Bristol Airport should anticipate further delays as the diversion route impacts access to the airport.
Authorities urge all motorists to stay updated on traffic reports and follow official diversion signage to ensure safe and efficient travel while the M5 remains closed.
