M5 Motorway Closed as Drivers Escape Scorching 28°C Heat Amid Two-Hour Delays

Drivers and passengers on the M5 motorway between junctions 23 and 24 have been forced to leave their vehicles amidst intense 28°C heat as emergency services shut the road in both directions. The closure, imposed by Avon and Somerset Police due to concerns for an individual’s safety, has caused nearly two-hour delays in both directions.

One frustrated driver, trapped for 30 minutes, highlighted the challenging conditions: “There are school buses, pregnant women, dogs, and workers all stuck in the sweltering heat.” This marks the second time in less than 24 hours that this section of the motorway has been closed.

Police confirmed the closures are essential for safety reasons. They stated: “Emergency services are responding to concerns for the safety of an individual, which has resulted in road closures on the M5 between J23 (Puriton) and J24 (Bridgwater South), as well as the A39 Bath Road near Bower Lane.”

While diversion routes are available for drivers approaching the closure, those already trapped are enduring rising temperatures inside their vehicles. Images from the scene show occupants opening car doors to increase airflow, with some choosing to stand outside their vehicles entirely.

National Highways reported that southbound traffic has been turned around, and efforts are ongoing to release northbound drivers. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and remain patient as emergency services manage the situation.
