M5 Motorway Closed Amid Safety Concern as Drivers Endure Sweltering 28°C Heat

Drivers and passengers on the M5 motorway were forced to evacuate their vehicles during a road closure at Bridgwater due to a safety incident. Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the motorway was shut in both directions between junctions 23 (Puriton) and 24 (Bridgwater South), causing significant delays.

The closure, prompted by concerns for an individual’s safety, sparked traffic jams with delays approaching two hours in both directions. Motorists were trapped in stifling 28°C heat throughout the morning, intensifying discomfort and frustration.

One driver, stuck for 30 minutes, described the challenging conditions: “There are school buses, pregnant women, dogs, and workers all stuck in the sweltering heat.” Some stranded occupants opened car doors to ventilate their vehicles, while others chose to leave their cars altogether seeking relief.

This marks the second time this section of the M5 has been closed in less than 24 hours. Police reiterated that the closures are “necessary” to maintain safety for everyone involved.

“In response to concerns for an individual’s safety, emergency services have closed the M5 between junctions 23 and 24, as well as the nearby A39 Bath Road,” Avon and Somerset Police stated. “We advise all road users to seek alternative routes until further notice.”

National Highways reported that southbound traffic has been turned around, and efforts are underway to free northbound drivers. Diversion routes are operational for those approaching the closure.

Motorists are urged to remain patient and comply with official guidance as emergency responders work to resolve the situation safely.
