M5 Incident Causes Long Delays and Closure

An incident on the M5 motorway in Somerset, which led to the closure of the road in both directions, has been resolved safely by police. Emergency services were called to attend to reports of a concern for welfare between Taunton and Bridgwater, causing significant delays for motorists in the area throughout the afternoon.

The closure prompted traffic to come to a standstill, with drivers seen getting out of their cars as the road remained impassable under the Sunday sun. While the southbound direction experienced lengthy congestion all the way to Bridgwater, the delays northbound were comparatively shorter.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police stated that officers responded to the concern for welfare and successfully resolved the incident just after midday, following which the road was reopened.

National Highways initially reported the closure between J25 Blackbrook Interchange (Taunton, Honiton, Yeovil, Weymouth A358) and J26 Chelston Interchange (Wellington A38) due to a police-led incident, with traffic officers diverting vehicles and providing assistance to stranded drivers.

Despite the reopening of the motorway, residual delays have been reported in the area following the incident.
