M5 Crash Near Cullompton Leaves Man Hospitalized; Police Seek Witnesses

Devon and Cornwall Police are urgently appealing for witnesses following two serious collisions on the M5 motorway last night. The incidents have resulted in the closure of the motorway in both directions between junctions 27 and 28, with diversion routes in place via the A38 and A361.

The first crash occurred around 9.50pm on Thursday, September 18, involving three vehicles: a Vauxhall Zafira, a Ford Ka, and a Porsche Boxster. The male driver of the Ford Ka sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

Later that evening, at approximately 11.10pm, a second, separate collision was reported near Junction 28. Devon and Cornwall Police have stated that further details regarding this second incident will be released in due course.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crashes or has dashcam footage to come forward. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the police through their official website or by calling 101, quoting log number 806 of 18 September.

The M5 remains closed in both directions, causing significant delays of about an hour for approaching traffic. Local villages are experiencing heavy congestion as drivers seek alternative routes. National Highways has confirmed that two additional secondary incidents occurred in the queues caused by the original crash, likely extending the motorway closure throughout the morning.

Drivers heading southbound are advised to follow diversion signs marked with a Solid Square symbol, while northbound motorists should follow diversion signs displaying a Hollow Diamond symbol.
