A serious incident led to the closure of the M5 in both directions this afternoon, causing long delays. The motorway was shut down between Taunton and Bridgwater as emergency services responded to a concern for welfare in the area at around 11.15 am today (Sunday, April 6).
Traffic came to a standstill, with motorists getting out of their cars as the road remained closed. Congestion reached Bridgwater in the southbound direction, while shorter delays were reported northbound.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed their attendance at the concern for welfare. The incident was safely resolved just after midday, and the road reopened shortly after.

National Highways reported the closure, stating, “The M5 in Somerset is closed in both directions between J25 Blackbrook Interchange and J26 Chelston Interchange due to a police-led incident.”
Drivers caught within the closure were assisted by traffic officers, and some were photographed standing along the motorway, uncertain of when traffic might resume.
Despite the resolution, residual delays are still being reported in the area.
