M5 Closed for Hours After Lorry Fire Causes Major Delays Near Exeter

Motorists on the M5 motorway near Exeter are experiencing severe delays of up to two hours after a lorry transporting domestic appliances and batteries caught fire between junctions 30 and 29. The blaze erupted on the northbound carriageway, prompting an immediate closure while emergency services work to extinguish the flames.

The affected stretch between Sandygate Interchange (J30) and Sowton Interchange (J29) remains completely closed this Wednesday afternoon, October 15. Firefighters from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue are actively combating the fire, using multiple fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, and water bowsers. The nature of the cargo—batteries and small appliances—has complicated firefighting efforts, prolonging the road closure.

National Highways has confirmed that traffic is being diverted onto the A30 and A3015, but significant congestion persists. Tailbacks of roughly nine miles have formed, impacting not only the M5 but also surrounding roads including the A30 and A38, with delays now reaching approximately 120 minutes.

Devon and Cornwall Police along with National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene managing the incident and directing traffic. Nearby residents have been advised by fire crews to keep windows closed due to smoke from the fire.

Traffic monitoring services report severe congestion extending back to junction 31, with spillover affecting local routes such as Bridge Road, Rydon Lane, Honiton Road, Moor Lane, and Exmouth Road as drivers seek alternative routes. Earlier in the day, traffic was temporarily held to allow emergency crews safe access to the scene.

Authorities continue to work to bring the situation under control and have not yet announced a timeline for reopening the motorway.
