Newly released data exposes the top 20 roads in Somerset with the highest number of speeding offences, with the M5 and M4 motorways leading the list. According to Avon & Somerset Police, more than 140,000 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for speeding were issued in the year ending March 2025.
Specifically, 140,188 drivers were caught exceeding speed limits, resulting in a substantial £14 million in fines, as each speeding penalty carries a fixed charge of £100. Notably, despite the high numbers, this figure represents a 7% decrease compared to the previous year’s 151,495 speeding fines.
The bulk of speeding incidents occurred on the M4, where 21,210 FPNs were handed out — averaging about 58 fines per day. The M5 and the M32 motorways also saw more than 10,000 penalties each. Focusing on stretches like the M5 between Junctions 26 and 27, where 2,171 offences were recorded, it’s clear that these three motorways made up half of the top 20 roads for speeding offences in the region.

Beyond the motorways, the B3122 St John’s Lane in south Bristol recorded 7,177 speeding fines, making it the leading non-motorway road in this category.
Among the most serious violations, four of the five worst speeding offenders were caught on the M4. One driver was recorded traveling at 135 mph westbound between junctions 19 and 20, while another reached 134 mph going eastbound—nearly double the 70 mph speed limit.
Speeding drivers face at least three penalty points on their licenses, and accumulating 12 points within three years can lead to disqualification. Avon & Somerset Police continue to emphasize road safety as a priority, urging drivers to adhere to speed limits to protect themselves and others.
