M5 and M4 Lead Somerset Roads for Speeding Offenses, Police Data Reveals

New data from Avon & Somerset Police has revealed the top 20 roads in Somerset where drivers are most frequently caught speeding. Between April 2024 and March 2025, the force issued a staggering 140,188 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for speeding violations.

This number represents a 7% decrease from the 151,495 fines issued in the previous year but remains alarmingly high. Each speeding offense carries a £100 fine and at least three penalty points on the driver’s license. Accruing 12 points within three years can result in a driving ban. Collectively, the fines could generate over £14 million in penalties.

The M4 motorway was the hotspot for speeding offenses, with 21,210 fines issued—an average of 58 per day—for drivers exceeding the 70mph speed limit. The M5 and M32 motorways also recorded high numbers, each surpassing 10,000 fines annually. Notably, a section of the M5 between Junctions 26 and 27 saw 2,171 speeding offenses alone.

The B3122 St John’s Lane in south Bristol was the highest-ranking non-motorway road, accounting for 7,177 speeding offenses. Together, the three motorways (M4, M5, and M32) make up half of the top 20 roads with the most speeding tickets issued.

Among the most extreme cases, four of the top five worst offenders were caught on the M4. Two drivers were recorded driving at speeds of 134mph and 135mph respectively—nearly double the legal limit—in February 2025 between junctions 19 and 20.

The data underscores the ongoing efforts by Avon & Somerset Police to tackle speeding and promote road safety across the region.
