M5 Amber Warning Issued Ahead of Bank Holiday Traffic Surge

As the Bank Holiday weekend approaches, motorists are being warned to brace for significant delays with over 20 million journeys expected daily. The AA has issued an amber traffic warning, highlighting the likelihood of severe congestion on major routes including the M5 and M4 motorways.

Nearly half of these journeys, projected between Saturday, May 24, and Monday, May 26, are anticipated to be under 50 miles, primarily for leisure purposes. Sunday is expected to see the highest volume of recreational travel, with more than seven million trips underway.

Key traffic hotspots include routes leading to popular coastal destinations such as the A303, M5, and A38, as well as corridors into Wales via the M4. Adding to the congestion, Bath Rugby supporters heading to the European Rugby Challenge Cup final against Lyon at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Friday evening are expected to flock in large numbers.

The rugby match begins at 8 pm, with gates opening at 6 pm, coinciding with the usual busy Friday getaway. Visit Cardiff has cautioned travelers to anticipate heavy traffic on the M4 and to plan their journeys accordingly.

The AA’s amber alert underscores the scale of anticipated travel, with more than 20 million trips expected just on Friday. Shaun Jones, AA Patrol of the Year, advises drivers to carry out essential vehicle checks—including tyres, oil, and coolant—and ensure sufficient fuel or charge for electric vehicles. He also recommends taking regular breaks during longer journeys to combat fatigue and promote safety.

By following these precautions and staying informed, drivers can help make the bank holiday travel period safer and more manageable for everyone.
