Longleat’s Summer Carnival: A Celebration of History, Fun, and Steam

This summer, Longleat is hosting a vibrant Summer Carnival that promises something for everyone—from history enthusiasts to adventure seekers. Taking place until Sunday, August 31, this festive event is set across the picturesque Wiltshire estate, blending traditional funfair excitement with immersive historical experiences and unique circus skills workshops.

Visitors can enjoy classic fairground attractions such as a charming carousel, lively swing boats, and miniature toy vehicle rides. For those looking to engage more actively, there are hands-on workshops where guests can learn circus talents like tightrope walking, stilt-walking, diabolo tossing, and mastering the walking globe.

Inside the iconic Longleat House, guests can embark on a self-guided Regency-inspired trail that reveals the rich heritage and stories behind this magnificent stately home.

Adding to the celebration is a special milestone for Longleat Railway, which is turning 60 this year. From Saturday, August 23 to Sunday, August 31, the estate will hold an anniversary week featuring daily whistle sounds in a ‘Whistle up’ tradition, a nod to Longleat’s historic role in the nationwide New Year’s Day celebration marking 200 years of modern railways. Visitors can also purchase commemorative souvenir tickets, and the flower bed near Longleat Central Station is being artistically shaped into the railway’s logo to honor the occasion.

In addition, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) will set up an informative stall on July 29 and 30, as well as August 3, where visitors can discover more about global conservation initiatives.

Scott Ashman, Longleat’s head of operations, shares, “It’s wonderful to bring together all aspects of Longleat for a vibrant summer event. This carnival showcases everything that defines Longleat—our wildlife, commitment to conservation, rich history, beloved railway, and of course, family-friendly fun.”
