Longleat in Wiltshire is preparing to welcome two new residents this summer - hippos Lola and Hodor. This mother-son duo, aged 21 and 8 respectively, were born at Whipsnade Zoo and will soon make Longleat their new home once a purpose-built complex is completed. The estate has plans to introduce more hippos to create a self-sustaining family group within a new purpose-built complex on the premises.
The arrival of Lola and Hodor marks the first new hippos since the passing of Sonia and Spot, who had been residing in Half Mile Pond for over four decades. The new hippo complex, underway since the beginning of the year, is expected to be finished by June.
Connor Corrigan, Team Leader of Large Hoofstock at Whipsnade Zoo, expressed the importance of this move for Hodor due to his genetic significance to the vulnerable common hippo population. The individuals at Whipsnade Zoo will be missed, but the team looks forward to their transition to a custom-designed exhibit at Longleat.

Darren Beasley, Head of Animal Operations at Longleat, highlighted the anticipation for the arrival of Lola, Hodor, and potentially more hippos, emphasizing the commitment to conservation, sustainability, and education.
As part of the official handover of the complex from Minshall Construction, a time capsule is being prepared, with local contributions welcome.
