Longleat Mourns Beloved Red Panda Lionel

Longleat has announced with great sadness the passing of Lionel, one of their cherished red pandas and a firm favourite among visitors. At just eight years old, Lionel’s loss is deeply felt by the Longleat family and all who admired him.

Lionel was one of four red pandas residing at Longleat and played a significant role in the European conservation breeding programme. During his time at the park, he fathered four cubs, helping to secure the future of this endangered species.

The announcement coincided with the eve of International Red Panda Day, an awareness event organised by the Red Panda Network, with whom Longleat collaborates closely on conservation efforts.

A Longleat spokesperson expressed their sorrow: “We are heartbroken to announce Lionel’s passing. Beyond his important contribution to the breeding programme, he became a beloved TV personality and provided unforgettable close-up experiences for our guests. He was dearly loved by both visitors and our dedicated keepers, who are committed to providing the highest standard of care for our red pandas and supporting the conservation of this vulnerable species.”

In honour of Lionel, Longleat’s keepers will share fond memories and highlight ongoing conservation work during International Red Panda Day this Saturday, continuing Lionel’s legacy of education and protection.
