Lockdown Art Blooms Into Love and Charity for Somerset Couple

During the first COVID-19 lockdown, Ivor and Carol, a couple from North Petherton, Somerset, discovered more than just a creative outlet—they found love that blossomed alongside their artistic journey. Encouraged by Ivor’s Shared Lives Carer, Rachel Bunce, and her daughter, artist Harriet Popham, the pair picked up painting to fill their days during restricted outings.

Rachel recalls, “During the first lockdown, we could only enjoy brief daily walks and needed something meaningful to keep us engaged. That’s how it all started — and the rest is history.”

Reunited after years since their school days, Ivor and Carol’s shared passion for art deepened their connection, leading to their marriage two years ago. Carol fondly remembers the special day: “I had four bridesmaids, and we even designed our own invitations.” Rachel adds, “It was truly magical.”

Both Ivor and Carol have support needs. When Carol’s circumstances changed, she moved in with her sister Rachel, who also supports Ivor in her home. Together, the couple found joy and purpose through creating art, exploring various mediums like paints, inks, and mixed media.

Carol enjoys painting birds, pots, and flowers, while Ivor’s focus is on pop icons such as Freddie Mercury and Amy Winehouse. Rachel observes, “Their styles balance each other well—Ivor’s attention to lines and details complements Carol’s softer approach. They often seek inspiration by visiting other exhibitions.”

Their debut exhibition at Bridgwater Arts Centre opened recently and has already raised thousands of pounds for Shelter charity. Their art has attracted buyers as far afield as Australia, and commissions continue to pour in.

Rachel beams with pride: “What began as a lockdown project has flourished remarkably. Apart from Shelter, they have also raised funds for Palestine through selling their artworks with The Blue House Makes.”

Running until November 8, the Bridgwater Arts Centre exhibition celebrates a heartwarming story of creativity, love, and community spirit that continues to inspire.
