Local Couple Closes Cherished Fish and Chip Shop After 39 Years

After nearly four decades of serving the community, Paul and Marianne Elson have announced the closure of their beloved fish and chip shop in Templecombe, Somerset. Bridge Fish and Chips, a staple on Templecombe’s High Street since 1986, will close its doors for good on December 20th as the couple step into a well-deserved retirement.

For 39 years, the Elsons have been a fixture in the village, witnessing generations of families grow and share special moments over portions of freshly battered cod and thick-cut chips. Their shop, nestled between the Co-op and the railway bridge, has earned a reputation for quality and friendliness, becoming a treasured part of local life.

Though eager to pass the business on to someone who would continue the tradition, Paul and Marianne were unable to find a buyer after more than a year of trying. With heavy hearts, they decided to close the shop rather than see it change hands without the right fit. “It has truly been the greatest privilege to serve the people of Templecombe,” they said. “We’ve shared in celebrations, comforted with simple meals, and cherished countless memories here.”

The couple scaled back their hours in recent years, now opening three days a week—Thursday evenings, and Friday and Saturday lunches and dinners—yet their commitment to quality never wavered. Their loyal customers expressed heartfelt gratitude and sadness at the news, reflecting on decades of enjoying fish suppers for celebrations, comforting meals, or just because.

As the final closing day approaches, the Elsons extend a sincere thank you to the community for their loyalty and friendship. Their legacy will live on in the memories and traditions they helped create—proof of the remarkable role a small local business can play in a village’s heart.
