Lightning Strikes and Tornado Warning as Met Office Issues Yellow Alert

Thunderstorms are currently sweeping across parts of the South West of England, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning. The alert, in effect until 9pm on Monday, June 22, warns of frequent lightning strikes, heavy rain, and gusty winds impacting the region.

The warning, issued at 5:24pm today, highlights the likelihood of torrential rain, hail in some areas, and strong wind gusts. Areas affected include Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon, and Wiltshire. Spectacular lightning strikes have already been observed in Bristol this evening.

Drivers are advised to exercise caution as road conditions may deteriorate due to spray, standing water, and hail, potentially causing longer journey times. There is also a possibility of delays to train services and short-term power outages.

Flooding remains a concern, with risks to both homes and businesses in the storm-hit areas.

Adding to the severity, the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) has issued a warning about a small risk of tornadoes accompanying the thunderstorms. TORRO states: “Thunderstorms developing in Devon and Somerset, moving east-northeast, are expected to affect parts of Wales, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire in the coming hours. There is a risk of large hail, strong wind gusts, and a small chance of tornadoes associated with these storms.”

A Met Office spokesperson commented: “An area of thunderstorms moving east will bring frequent lightning, gusty winds, torrential rain, and hail in some locations. The storms are moving quickly, which limits the chance of widespread heavy rain; however, some places could experience 20-25 mm of rainfall over a short time, leading to brief flooding.

“Most of the impacts will stem from hazards such as lightning strikes potentially causing power cuts, challenging driving conditions due to heavy rain, and localized damage from strong winds or hail to vulnerable structures.”

The yellow warning also extends to parts of the East of England, London, and South East England.
