Lightning Strikes and Tornado Risk Prompt Met Office Yellow Alert

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as severe thunderstorms sweep across the South West, bringing frequent lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds. The alert, effective until 9pm on Monday, June 22, covers areas including Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon, and Wiltshire.

Lightning strikes have already been observed in Bristol, accompanied by torrential downpours and hail in some locations. Meteorologists warn that driving conditions may become hazardous due to heavy rain, spray, and standing water, potentially causing delays on roads and train services. Additionally, there is a possibility of short-term power outages and localized flooding affecting homes and businesses.

The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) has highlighted a small risk of tornado formation amid the stormy conditions. These thunderstorms are currently developing in Devon and Somerset and moving northeast, expected to impact parts of Wales, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire in the coming hours. Hail, strong wind gusts, and lightning remain key concerns.

A Met Office spokesperson advised that the storms, moving quickly across the region, could deposit 20-25 mm of rain in short bursts, leading to localized flooding. However, the main risks include lightning strikes causing power disruptions, difficult travel conditions, and potential damage from hail and strong winds.

The yellow warning also extends to parts of the East of England, London, and South East England as the unsettled weather system progresses.
