Lidl has unveiled proposals to build a new supermarket in the Somerset village of Cheddar. The German discount retailer aims to construct the store off the A371 Upper New Road, a site designated by Somerset Council for residential and commercial development.
This new Lidl supermarket would be the second in Cheddar, complementing the existing Sainsbury’s store. The company is currently consulting with the local community before submitting a formal planning application.
Lidl emphasized the significance of this investment, describing it as a multi-million-pound project that will provide affordable shopping choices for residents of Cheddar and the surrounding area. The store is also expected to generate approximately 40 local jobs.

“The proposed location at Upper New Road offers an ideal spot for a discount foodstore, delivering Lidl’s most sustainable store format along with a complete range of products,” representatives said.
The retail chain is encouraging residents to review the consultation materials and participate in a feedback survey to share their opinions. Should planning permission be granted, Lidl will announce a detailed construction timeline.
The new supermarket will feature a variety of products designed to meet the needs of the local community, enhancing shopping convenience and choice in the area.
