Liberal Democrats Secure Dual Victories in Somerset Council By-Elections

The Liberal Democrats celebrated a significant success in Somerset Council’s recent by-elections, winning both contested seats last night.

In Glastonbury, the Lib Dems successfully defended their seat, with Ewan Cameron emerging as the new councillor. Meanwhile, in Dunster, Liberal Democrat candidate Cara Strom achieved a noteworthy gain by winning the seat from the Conservatives with nearly 50% of the vote.

Cara Strom secured 49.6% of the vote in Dunster, outperforming three other candidates and marking a clear swing towards the Liberal Democrats. Following her victory, Strom expressed gratitude to local residents for their support and emphasized her commitment to representing all constituents, regardless of political affiliation.

“Many people have told me on the doorsteps that the Liberal Democrats are recognised for hard work, bringing communities together, and standing up for society’s most vulnerable,” said Strom. “Despite the challenges posed by government policies, we continue to strive to deliver for the people of Dunster.”

She also acknowledged the efforts of volunteers and campaigners throughout the election. Looking ahead, Strom outlined her priorities: actively listening to residents, safeguarding essential local services, and strengthening community ties across Dunster and neighbouring villages.

“This result shows voters want a councillor who listens, works hard, and prioritises the community,” she added. “I am dedicated to ensuring local voices are heard loud and clear.”

In Glastonbury, the Liberal Democrats maintained their strong presence with Ewan Cameron’s election. Councillor Oliver Patrick, the associate portfolio holder for climate change and active travel, hailed Cameron’s win as a sign of continued public endorsement for the party’s work in Somerset.

“I am absolutely thrilled that Ewan won the Glastonbury by-election, which followed the passing of our respected colleague Councillor Nick Cottle, chairman of the planning committee east,” Patrick said. “These results confirm that voters still back the Liberal Democrats as their local champions in the southwest — proving that Reform UK is not unbeatable.”

Following these by-elections, the Somerset Council’s composition now stands at: Liberal Democrats 62, Conservatives 32, Labour 5, Green Party 5, Independents 4, and Reform UK 1.

Voter turnout for the Dunster by-election was 32.2%, with six ballots rejected. In Glastonbury, turnout was slightly higher at 33.5%, with five ballots rejected.
