In a decisive by-election held on Thursday, November 6, Gareth Williams secured a clear victory for the Liberal Democrats, capturing the Wellington South ward seat from Reform. This election was triggered by the resignation of former Mayor Marcus Barr, who had been Reform’s sole representative on the council.
Williams topped the poll with 471 votes, more than doubling the tally of second-place candidate Andy Denison from Reform, who received 212 votes. Conservative contender Alex Yates came third with 100 votes, followed by Labour’s Bethany Hill with 26, and Independent Keiran Harcombe with 12. Voter turnout stood at 37 percent.
This win increases the Liberal Democrats' presence on Wellington Town Council to seven seats, alongside four independents, three Labour members, and one Conservative councillor.

Reflecting on his victory, Williams expressed gratitude to the voters and emphasized the importance of community engagement during his campaign. “Meeting residents who share my concerns allowed me to develop a clear plan for action. This gives me a focused vision on how to improve Wellington’s infrastructure during my time on the council,” he said.
Williams also acknowledged the support of the Liberal Democrats team, crediting their hard work and welcoming spirit for his success. “The team’s dedication made a big difference and I’m proud to now serve as a town councillor,” he added.
Present at the vote count was Gideon Amos, Liberal Democrat MP for Taunton and Wellington, who praised Williams' commitment. “Gareth’s hard work and genuine connection with residents exemplify what our party stands for. He will be a dedicated advocate for Wellington’s community,” Amos commented.
