Somerset County Cricket Club has secured the continued leadership of its captain, Lewis Gregory, who has signed a new two-year contract extension, committing to the club until at least the conclusion of the 2027 season.
At 33 years old, Gregory has become an indispensable figure for Somerset. He led the team to Vitality Blast triumphs in 2023 and 2025 and stands as the club’s all-time leading wicket taker in T20 cricket. Awarded his County Cap in 2015, Gregory was appointed Club Captain in 2024. Throughout his career with Somerset, he has amassed over 7,500 runs and taken 637 wickets, underscoring his value as an all-rounder.
Reflecting on his commitment, Gregory stated, “There’s something genuinely special about Somerset, and I wouldn’t want to be playing my cricket anywhere else. I still get a buzz every time I drive through the gates. Leading this team and representing the region is something I take very seriously, and I’ll continue to give my absolute best whenever I take the field.

“I’ve treasured the responsibility of captaining this incredible group, and I hope we can bring more trophies to our Members and supporters over the coming years.”
Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, expressed his enthusiasm about Gregory’s extended stay: “Lewis is a leader both on and off the field. His consistent performances, both as a player and captain, have a tremendous impact. He embodies what it means to represent this Club, and his decision to remain reflects the calibre of players who want to be part of our ambitious journey.”
In related news, Somerset CCC has been handed a four-point deduction in the Rothesay County Championship following a hearing on September 11th. An additional four-point suspension will remain in place until the end of the 2027 County Championship season. The penalty resulted from a breach of ECB Pitch Regulations, as the pitch during the Somerset vs. Durham match in July was rated “Below Average” by Match Officials.
Somerset CEO Jamie Cox commented, “While we are disappointed with the outcome, we are pleased the tribunal found no evidence that the Club deliberately produced a substandard wicket. We appreciate the CDP’s clarity and transparency throughout the process. Somerset CCC will always strive to prepare the best possible pitches to ensure a compelling contest between bat and ball.”
