‘Late and overcrowded’ Somerset buses set for improvements

First Bus has committed to improving the frequently late and overcrowded bus services 28 and 25 in Somerset, following ongoing complaints from passengers. Rachel Gilmour, MP for Tiverton and Minehead, has been actively pressing the bus operator to enhance the service quality, especially focusing on these two key routes.

Ms. Gilmour’s office has received hundreds of complaints, highlighting issues such as persistent delays and overcrowding—particularly on the Number 28 route during busy days like Mondays and Fridays, which coincide with changeover days at Minehead’s Butlin’s resort.

In response, Ms. Gilmour recently met with senior First Bus officials, including their operations director, at the Taunton Depot to discuss these ongoing problems. As a result, First Bus has promised to implement measures aimed at improving punctuality and passenger comfort on both routes.

“For far too long, the Number 28 and Number 25 services have been below acceptable standards, with buses often arriving late and overcrowded,” said Ms. Gilmour. “Our community relies heavily on these services to access work, healthcare, and essential appointments—especially given the lack of a direct train link and the congested A39. I’m pleased First Bus has responded to our calls and will introduce necessary improvements.”

She added that she will continue to hold First Bus accountable, ensuring the company delivers better services to the people of West Somerset. Passengers are encouraged to report any ongoing issues such as delays or overcrowding to help monitor progress.
