Large Fire Severely Damages Industrial Units and Businesses on Weston-super-Mare Outskirts

A significant fire on the outskirts of Weston-super-Mare has caused extensive damage to industrial units and local businesses, prompting an active police investigation.

The fire broke out near Locking Farm Industrial Estate in the early hours of Tuesday, 18 August. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at approximately 3am to tackle the blaze, which occurred close to the A371 road. To facilitate emergency procedures, the A371 was temporarily closed but reopened after the fire was brought under control later that day.

Two industrial units were completely engulfed by the fire, with numerous surrounding businesses suffering severe damage. Crews remained on-site until around 5.45pm to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and the area was safe.

Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that their investigations are in the preliminary stages. Officers are pursuing several leads and will conduct high visibility reassurance patrols in the area over the coming days. The force encourages local residents to approach officers with any concerns.

Police have appealed for the public’s help in identifying individuals who were acting suspiciously near the A371, or who noticed any unusual activity between 2am and 3am on Tuesday.

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Andy Barry acknowledged the community’s concern, stating, “Incidents like this are a major worry both locally and nationally, especially following extended periods of hot and dry weather. Our investigation is in the early stages, but anyone found responsible for criminal offences will face appropriate action.”

He added, “Fortunately, no one was seriously injured during this event. However, the public should anticipate an increased police presence while enquiries continue. Fires in dry fields can spread rapidly and cause serious harm, so we urge anyone with information, or any relevant CCTV, dashcam, or mobile phone footage to come forward.”

Members of the public can assist the investigation by filling out the police’s online appeals form or by calling 101, quoting reference number 5226232390.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or through their online form. No personal details are required, and callers will not be asked to provide evidence or speak in court.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and remain committed to uncovering the cause of the fire.
