Large Fire Causes Severe Damage to Industrial Units in Weston-super-Mare

A major fire broke out near the edge of Weston-super-Mare early on Tuesday morning, leading to significant damage to industrial units and local businesses. The blaze began near the Locking Farm Industrial Estate and was reported to emergency services around 3am on 18 August.

Firefighters quickly responded to contain the fire, which affected the vicinity of the A371 road. Authorities temporarily closed the A371 and Locking Road for safety reasons, reopening them once the situation was under control by approximately 5.45pm.

Police have confirmed that two industrial units were fully engulfed, with several neighbouring businesses suffering severe impact from the blaze.

Avon and Somerset Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which remains at an early stage. Officers are exploring multiple leads and have urged the public to provide any relevant information.

In recent days, the force has increased high-visibility patrols around the area to reassure residents and maintain safety. They encourage anyone with concerns or information to approach officers.

The police have specifically requested help from anyone who observed suspicious behaviour or unusual activity near the A371 between 2am and 3am on Tuesday.

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Andy Barry stated: “We appreciate how deeply concerning incidents like this are to our local community, especially in light of recent hot, dry weather that raises the fire risk. The investigation is ongoing, and we will take appropriate action against anyone found responsible for criminal offences.

“It is fortunate no serious injuries occurred during this fire, but we urge all residents to remain vigilant. You may notice increased police presence as we continue our enquiries.

“Dry field fires spread rapidly in these weather conditions, posing serious risks including extensive property damage, injury, or loss of life.

“We encourage anyone with information, including any CCTV, dashcam, or mobile footage, to come forward to assist us.

“If you have relevant information, please complete the police’s online appeals form or call 101 quoting reference number 5226232390.

“Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their anonymous online form. No personal details are taken, and callers will not have to interact directly with the police or attend court.”
