Lando Norris Secures Third as Kimi Antonelli Outpaces Lewis Hamilton in British GP Sprint

Kimi Antonelli delivered a stunning performance at Silverstone, denying Lewis Hamilton a home victory by winning the British Grand Prix sprint race. The 19-year-old Italian teenager boldly disrupted the Ferrari driver’s strong start and claimed a decisive sprint victory.

Hamilton began the race from pole position, holding back championship leader Antonelli through the opening corner. Early on, Hamilton seemed in control, building a solid lead over Antonelli. However, the Italian quickly closed the gap and completed a masterful overtake on lap eight of seventeen, crossing the finish line 2.7 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Lando Norris thrilled his dedicated fanbase of 16,000 at the iconic ‘Landostand’ by climbing three positions to finish third. George Russell rounded out the top four in an eventful sprint race packed with intense wheel-to-wheel battles.

Antonelli’s win extends his championship lead over Mercedes teammate Russell from 40 to 43 points heading into Sunday’s main race. Meanwhile, Hamilton’s deficit grows to 47 points, marking a challenging weekend for the seven-time world champion.

The race saw Norris temporarily take second place after a strong opening lap, even overtaking Antonelli briefly. However, Antonelli quickly regained his position and set his sights on Hamilton. Behind them, Russell engaged in a fierce fight, overtaking Oscar Piastri and Norris, but ultimately fell back behind Norris and Max Verstappen.

By lap five, Antonelli’s Mercedes swapped positions with Hamilton’s Ferrari, closing in on the leader. Despite Hamilton’s defensive moves through the opening corners, Antonelli found a way past on the Hangar Straight, showcasing his superior pace.

The electric atmosphere of the sell-out British crowd hoped for a Hamilton comeback, but the championship leader’s determination was no match for Antonelli’s dominant performance. Crossing the line with authority, the Italian extended his championship lead in style.

“In control all the way,” said Antonelli’s race engineer Peter Bonnington after the race. The young driver’s confident response: “Let’s go,” signaled his intent to continue his championship charge.

Norris, supported by his passionate ‘Landostand’ fans, celebrated a hard-fought third place. Russell found some consolation by passing Verstappen on lap nine, limiting the championship damage, though he finished 10.6 seconds behind Antonelli. Charles Leclerc also moved ahead of Verstappen to claim fifth, leaving the Red Bull driver in sixth after starting third.

Antonelli further enhanced his championship bid by backing up his sprint win with pole position for Sunday’s British Grand Prix. After seeing his lead trimmed from 68 to 40 points by Russell over the past two rounds, Antonelli’s commanding performance under the Silverstone sun reasserted his dominance.

In qualifying, Antonelli edged out Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.175 seconds, with Hamilton and Russell lining up third and fourth respectively. Isack Hadjar secured fifth, two positions ahead of teammate Max Verstappen, while Norris starts sixth for McLaren.

With momentum firmly on his side, Antonelli looks poised to extend his championship lead in front of his home crowd this Sunday.
