Lando Norris Secures Second Place as Kimi Antonelli Clashes with George Russell in Canadian GP Sprint

Tensions flared between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli during the Canadian Grand Prix sprint, igniting their intense title battle and leaving the young Italian visibly furious. The incident, occurring at turn one, saw the two Mercedes drivers make contact with Antonelli forced off the track onto the grass. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff quickly intervened, telling Antonelli to “stop the radio moaning” after the collision with his teammate.

This marked the first major confrontation between the pair this season. Antonelli accused Russell of pushing him off the track and demanded a penalty for the British driver. Despite the setback, the 19-year-old tried to recover by attempting an aggressive move around the outside at turn eight but again went off into the grass, losing a position to Lando Norris.

Lando Norris took full advantage of the chaos, securing second place as Russell held off relentless pressure from the defending world champion. Russell went on to claim his second sprint victory of the season, while Antonelli, although visibly angry and momentarily losing focus, managed to finish third, keeping a reduced lead in the championship—now 18 points ahead.

Oscar Piastri completed the top four, with Charles Leclerc finishing fifth for Ferrari, followed by Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

The rivalry between Mercedes teammates has escalated after a calm start to the season. In Miami, Russell downplayed his points deficit, attributing it to the track. However, he has historically excelled at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with pole positions in the last two years and a race win last season. Russell also secured sprint pole on Friday, setting the tone for the weekend.

The clash unfolded on lap six when Antonelli, closing in fast, positioned himself alongside Russell on the pit straight, attempting an outside pass at turn one. Russell held his line, forcing Antonelli onto the grass, prompting the Italian’s furious protests over team radio.

“This was very naughty. Not fair, he pushed me off,” Antonelli stated before adding, “That should be a penalty, I was alongside the mirror.” His engineer Peter Bonnington urged him to stay composed, and Wolff firmly instructed, “Concentrate on the racing please and not the radio moaning.”

Antonelli’s frustration continued throughout the race, including on the final lap at the first corner, where he went off track again as Norris held firm.

Wolff later issued a stern reminder: “Kimi this is the fourth time – we talk about it internally and not over the radio, OK.”

As the race concluded with a brief handshake between teammates, the dynamic between Russell and Antonelli has taken a significant turn, adding another dramatic chapter to their growing championship rivalry.
