Lando Norris believes that winning his first Formula One World Championship has ignited a fierce hunger in George Russell, who is eager to dethrone him as the sport’s top driver.
Norris, who will enter next month’s Australian Grand Prix proudly carrying the number one on his McLaren, secured his maiden title by narrowly edging out Max Verstappen by just two points in last season’s thrilling finale in Abu Dhabi. Despite McLaren’s recent success, having clinched the constructors' championship for two consecutive seasons, some expect the team to be chasing the pace set by Russell and Mercedes this year.
The recent regulatory shake-up in Formula One has seen Mercedes hit the ground running, and Russell has been named the bookmakers' favorite to claim the upcoming title—an advantage Norris held at the same point last season.

Having entered Formula One alongside Russell and Williams driver Alex Albon in 2019, Norris shared some insights from a recent chat with his peers. “We played padel together the other day, and I can tell you that my championship win has sparked more hunger, especially in George. He’s all a bit giddy right now, and that’s fantastic to see,” Norris said.
Norris dominated much of last season thanks to McLaren’s competitive car, clinching the team title with six races still remaining. Verstappen himself admitted late in the season that he would have easily secured his fifth championship if he had been behind the wheel of Norris’s McLaren.
Reflecting on the rivalry, Norris added, “Winning the title hopefully earns an extra level of respect from others because those who’ve done it understand the dedication it demands. I haven’t asked for it, but it’s a welcome bonus.”
He also acknowledged his differing mindset compared to Verstappen. “I’m always striving to improve and recognize there are areas where I need to get better. When competing at this level, near perfection is essential. I’m eager to work on those details.”
Norris remains as motivated as ever heading into the new season. “I don’t feel any different coming into this year. My baseline is still to go out and win. If I don’t, I’ll always be proud of what I’ve achieved. Last year’s success hasn’t diminished my ambition—I want to do it again. I’m entering this season with the same drive and motivation as before, focused on winning.”
