Lando Norris Retires Again as Kimi Antonelli Claims Historic Monaco Grand Prix Victory

Kimi Antonelli etched his name into Formula One history by becoming the youngest driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix at just 19 years and nine months old. His dominant display at the prestigious event marked a significant milestone in his rising career while dealing another blow to Lando Norris’s title defense, as Norris was forced to retire for the second consecutive race.

Antonelli’s victory surpassed Lewis Hamilton’s previous record, set 16 years ago when Hamilton won Monaco at age 23. Hamilton finished second behind the young Italian, who now stands as the clear favorite to succeed Hamilton at Mercedes following his fifth consecutive win. Meanwhile, George Russell’s day ended in disappointment outside the points, effectively ending his championship hopes.

By the 60th lap of 78, Antonelli had built a commanding lead of over 30 seconds ahead of Hamilton and had even lapped the field up to third place. However, drama unfolded when Lance Stroll crashed, prompting a safety car deployment. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, frustrated by the team’s decision to pit him for fresh tires after Stroll’s incident, later crashed at the Rascasse corner. This led to a red flag as officials conducted emergency repairs on the deteriorating street surface.

After a 37-minute stoppage and temporary track repairs, the race resumed with a second standing start. Antonelli maintained composure and outdrove Hamilton on the short sprint to Saint Devote, extending his winning streak and boosting his championship lead to 66 points ahead of Hamilton and 68 ahead of Russell.

Russell’s day was marred by a late drive-through penalty for incorrectly serving a pit-lane speeding sanction, dropping him to 13th place. This result further damages his championship challenge. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar and Oscar Piastri rounded out the podium and top-four finishes, respectively.

Lando Norris, last year’s Monte Carlo winner and current world champion, retired on lap 49 due to engine failure. Max Verstappen suffered from technical issues on the grid, ending his race before it began.

The event also drew attention for the arrival of American reality star Kim Kardashian, partner to seven-time world champion Hamilton, who stirred excitement within the paddock.

Following six of the 22 races this season, Antonelli leads the standings with 156 points, a margin that already surpasses his entire total from a challenging rookie year. Once criticized by 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg for inconsistent performances, Antonelli is now demonstrating maturity and consistency well beyond his years.

Antonelli reflected on his remarkable weekend: “It has been an incredible weekend and one of those days where we just had amazing pace. It just came naturally and gave me the confidence to push. The job is not finished, and it is a long season. We have to keep raising the bar.”

Hamilton praised Antonelli and Mercedes, saying, “I have to congratulate Kimi and the Mercedes team. My old family have created an amazing car and Kimi is doing an incredible job to keep delivering. I am really happy for him. I can’t keep up with them just yet and it is going to take a lot of work to get to that level but to get another second place is a great feeling.”

For Russell, the season’s promising start has unraveled quickly after winning the opening race. Today’s penalty and finish outside the points have seriously compromised his championship challenge.
