The shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year features six exceptional athletes, including England teammates Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton, F1 World Champion Lando Norris, golfer Rory McIlroy, darts sensation Luke Littler, and rugby star Ellie Kildunne.
Kelly and Hampton put on spectacular performances during England’s dramatic penalty shootout win over Spain in the Euro 2025 final. Kelly scored the decisive winning penalty, while Hampton’s two crucial saves proved vital. Kelly’s achievements come after a challenging personal period, followed by a remarkable switch from Manchester City to Arsenal, culminating in both a European Championship and a Champions League title. Meanwhile, Hampton earned the prestigious Yashin Trophy as the world’s best female goalkeeper at the recent Ballon d’Or awards.
Lando Norris, recently crowned Formula One World Champion and the 11th Briton to claim the title, secured his place on the shortlist after a thrilling season. He narrowly defeated Max Verstappen and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in one of the sport’s closest title races in 15 years.

At just 17, Luke Littler became the youngest darts world champion in history earlier this year. He further made history by completing the PDC Triple Crown—winning the world championship, Premier League, and Matchplay titles—and now holds the number one spot in the rankings.
Golf legend Rory McIlroy, 36, celebrated two major victories in 2025. His Masters win came after a dramatic playoff against Justin Rose, making him only the sixth man to complete a grand slam of golf’s four major tournaments. He also played a significant role in Europe’s thrilling Ryder Cup victory over the USA, contributing three and a half crucial points.
Ellie Kildunne had a standout year in women’s rugby, scoring five tries as England triumphed at the Women’s Rugby World Cup. Despite missing the quarter-final due to concussion, she shone brightly in the semi-final against France with two tries, and added another in the final against Canada. Earlier, she helped England secure Six Nations glory.
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year award ceremony will take place in Salford on December 18. Fans will have the opportunity to vote live during the broadcast to decide who will take home the coveted prize.
