Lando Norris’ ascent to becoming Formula One’s newest world champion has sparked joy and pride far beyond the racetrack. John Bishop, who served as Norris’ housemaster at Millfield School’s Great House during the driver’s senior school years, recalls a young man whose talent and determination always pointed to a bright future.
Norris, 26, achieved his maiden F1 title after securing a third-place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, joining the elite ranks of just 11 British drivers ever crowned world champion. Born in Bristol and raised in Glastonbury by an English father and Belgian mother, Norris stepped into the world of karting at just seven years old.
His education at Millfield School in Somerset spanned nine years alongside his elder brother Oliver. Starting in the prep school at year two and moving into the senior school at 13, Norris left at year 10 to fully dedicate himself to his burgeoning racing career.

John Bishop fondly remembers the young Norris as both popular and exceptionally focused. “He had the talent that was recognised early on and carefully nurtured,” Bishop said. “It’s been remarkable to watch McLaren manage his progression so well over the years.”
Bishop’s memories paint a picture of a mature, sociable teenager with a strong work ethic: “He was really polite, had a great sense of humour, and loved being part of the school community,” he remarked. Balancing the pressures of competitive racing and schoolwork was no small feat, but Norris managed both with enviable maturity.
Winning the Karting World Championships at 14 was an early sign of his destiny. By the time he debuted in Formula One at 19, he had become the youngest British driver in history. Bishop notes that Norris’ ability to reflect critically on his performances, analyzing every detail to improve, has been key to his success.
“When he came back from a tough race weekend, he’d be deep in thought – fully focused on what he could learn,” Bishop said. His capacity for self-reflection and relentless drive distinguish him not only as an athlete but as a remarkable individual.
The global congratulations flooding in, including a message from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, underscore the magnitude of Norris’ achievement. Yet Bishop remains curious about what lies ahead for the champion. “I wonder what motivates him now and what his ambitions are for the future,” he said.
Lando Norris’ story is a testament to raw talent, unwavering focus, and grounded determination, steadily propelling a young boy with big dreams to the very top of the motorsport world.
