Lando Norris Falters as Kimi Antonelli Snatches Monaco Grand Prix Pole Ahead of Max Verstappen

Kimi Antonelli continued his impressive form by clinching pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix, delivering a major blow to George Russell’s world championship aspirations.

Antonelli, who has dominated the last four races, expertly navigated the tight and iconic streets of Monte Carlo to edge out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by just 0.043 seconds. Meanwhile, Russell faced a difficult qualifying session, settling for sixth place, almost four-tenths slower than his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, who qualified third. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc claimed fourth, with Verstappen’s teammate Isack Hadjar in fifth.

McLaren celebrated a milestone as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris prepared to start their 1,000th race for the team from seventh and eighth respectively. However, Norris’s qualifying performance was underwhelming, reflecting a weekend of challenges for McLaren.

Russell, who fell 43 points behind Antonelli after retiring while leading in Canada, urgently needed a strong result in Monaco – a track notorious for its difficulty in overtaking. Yet, he admitted frustration: “I just don’t feel like I have got any grip. I don’t really get it.”

Despite a promising pace on Friday, Hamilton was unable to match the speed of Antonelli and Verstappen in qualifying. The seven-time world champion, supported by the presence of celebrity Kim Kardashian in the paddock, ended up 0.228 seconds off pole. Leclerc, meanwhile, flirted with disaster in Q3, nearly crashing twice and finishing three-tenths of a second behind Antonelli.

Ferrari’s weekend was further dampened by the absence of team boss Fred Vasseur, who was hospitalized for undisclosed reasons.

The narrow Monaco circuit also caused drama in the early stages of qualifying. Gabriel Bortoleto crashed heavily at the Nouvelle Chicane, damaging his suspension and prompting a red flag that disrupted the session. Ollie Bearman, still troubled after a crash in final practice, failed to progress beyond Q1 and will start 19th on the grid.

At the rear, Aston Martin faced a tough qualifying day with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll ending up over two seconds behind the leaders, occupying the last row of the grid.

As the field prepares for Sunday’s 78-lap race, the tight street circuit promises a challenging battle where qualifying positions could define the outcome.
