Lando Norris Embraces Patience as McLaren Faces Tough Start at Australian GP

Defending Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris remains unshaken even if victory at the Australian Grand Prix this weekend eludes him. As reigning drivers' and constructors' champions, McLaren once dominated the grid, but the sweeping regulation changes for the new season have blurred the competitive landscape.

With uncertainty hanging over the true pecking order, many experts—including McLaren themselves—anticipate a tougher fight ahead, signaling that they may not replicate last year’s dominance straight out of the gate. Despite this, 26-year-old Norris is confident that starting behind the leader doesn’t mean falling behind.

“I don’t think we’re starting on the back foot,” Norris said. “Even if you’re second, third, or fourth quickest, that’s still a very strong place to begin. In previous seasons, when improving over the year has been harder, we’ve shown it’s possible to come back stronger. It’s a long season.”

Norris has grappled with frustration over less-than-ideal performances in the past, but this year he emphasizes patience and resilience as crucial to his title defence. “One of the biggest lessons from last year is not getting too frustrated over one or two bad races or a rough start. Things can turn around if you keep working hard,” he added.

He places firm faith in McLaren’s ability to develop and upgrade the car throughout the season, regardless of how the initial races unfold. “Whether we start well or not, I expect us to keep pushing and bring significant improvements as the season progresses. Our success won’t be decided by the first few races alone.”

Norris’s teammate, local Australian Oscar Piastri, is more cautious in his outlook. After a disappointing ninth-place finish last year following an intense battle for the lead, Piastri is eager to secure his first home victory but tempers expectations given the current competition from Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull.

“It would be very optimistic to expect we have the same form as last year at this event,” Piastri admitted. “We’re near the front, but from testing it seems Mercedes and Ferrari have a bit of an edge, along with Red Bull. The situation changes quickly as teams bring updates, so we’ll have to see.”

Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Piastri remains hopeful: “We can still have a strong result, but matching last year’s performance will require us to find more speed and improvements.”

As McLaren embarks on this unpredictable season, Norris’s composed approach and Piastri’s realistic outlook underline a shared determination to rise to the challenge — no matter how tough the start.
