Lando Norris Dominates Miami Grand Prix Sprint for First Win of the Season

Lando Norris secured his first victory of the season at the Miami Grand Prix sprint, showcasing a commanding performance from pole position. The McLaren driver maintained an unchallenged lead throughout the race, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of his teammate Oscar Piastri, who completed a strong one-two finish for McLaren.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli had a disappointing race after starting second; a slow getaway saw him drop positions, ultimately finishing fourth on the track. His race further suffered due to a five-second penalty for track limits, which demoted him to sixth place. This setback cut his early lead in the drivers' championship to seven points, with Mercedes driver George Russell capitalizing by finishing ahead of Antonelli.

Norris remains 42 points behind Antonelli in the standings, partly due to missing the Chinese Grand Prix because of mechanical issues. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton engaged in a fierce battle, with Verstappen edging out Hamilton to finish sixth and seventh respectively—Verstappen’s position improved due to Antonelli’s penalty.

“It was a good race, nice to be back on the top step, even if it is just a sprint,” Norris said post-race. “Massive job from the team, bringing the upgrades. Happy to get it done for the team. It was hot out there, quite sweaty. A perfect way to start the weekend—and probably the first time all year without any issues, touch wood.”

Mercedes had dominated the season so far, winning all races in both sprint and main events. However, McLaren arrived in Miami with significant upgrades that brought them back into contention. Norris also disrupted Mercedes’ qualifying dominance by taking pole position for the sprint, marking a major breakthrough at the circuit where he achieved his first F1 victory in 2024.

Both Antonelli and Russell have struggled with slow starts throughout the season despite attempts to improve their launch off the line. Antonelli’s hesitation at the lights allowed Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to overtake him at the start. Antonelli fought hard to defend his position against Russell, while Hamilton and Verstappen battled fiercely after a close wheel-to-wheel clash in the opening laps.

Verstappen passed Hamilton to take sixth place but was instructed to give the position back after running off track. He eventually secured the place cleanly on lap ten. At the front, Norris maintained a strong lead, with Piastri resisting late pressure from Leclerc to secure McLaren’s dominant finish.

Leclerc criticized Antonelli’s racecraft in the heat of the moment, calling him “bad wheel-to-wheel.” Reflecting post-race, Leclerc acknowledged his remarks were “harsh” but expressed hope that their ongoing on-track battles would calm down. Leclerc added that he respects Antonelli as the only Italian driver on the grid competing against Ferrari and hopes for more measured racing in the future.
