Landlady’s “Use It or Lose It” Plea to Save Authentic Somerset Pub on Castle Cary High Street

Miranda “Pip,” the passionate landlady of the White Hart in Castle Cary, has issued a heartfelt appeal to the community to rally behind their cherished local pub. Despite taking over the historic venue just last December, Pip has quickly become a driving force to preserve the White Hart as a “true Somerset pub” amid mounting challenges faced by traditional pubs.

Founded in 1859, the White Hart proudly retains its original 19th-century fireplace, a symbol of its rich heritage. Yet, for Pip, the heart of the pub goes beyond bricks and mortar—it’s the diverse group of locals who bring the place to life every day. “Without them, the pub is just four walls and a roof,” she says, emphasizing the strong community spirit that defines the White Hart.

Nominated by patrons for SomersetLive’s Pub of the Year, the White Hart stands out for its welcoming atmosphere, large beer garden, and vibrant summer live music sessions. Its beverage offerings include local favourites like Thatchers Gold cider, Birra Moretti, and a carefully curated rotation of guest real ales that reflect the pub’s dedication to quality.

Though currently not serving food, Pip and her team are working hard to introduce a food menu, while continuing to delight customers with their popular cream tea packages and an array of homemade cakes and cookies.

Highlighting the importance of local pubs in 2025 and beyond, Pip warns of the decline in the pub industry, with 412 pubs closing across England and Wales in 2024 alone. “You really have to ‘use it or lose it,’” she asserts, urging locals to support their community hubs, sustain the local economy, and preserve cherished traditions.

Winning Pub of the Year would be a testament not just to the White Hart’s resilience, but also to Castle Cary’s spirit. “It’s not the profit or turnover that makes a pub successful—it’s the people,” Pip reflects. As the future of Castle Cary’s high street hangs in the balance, the White Hart remains a beacon of hope, unity, and authentic Somerset pub culture.
