Land Girl Celebrates 100 Years with Royal Birthday Wishes and Family Joy

Olivia Thornton Paget, fondly known as Peggy, a former World War II Land Girl, celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends, and cherished memories. The milestone event took place at Ivybank House Care Home in Bath, where Peggy now resides, and included a special congratulatory message from King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Born in Wimbledon in 1925, Peggy was only 14 when World War II erupted. Committed to supporting her country, she joined the Women’s Land Army and worked diligently on a farm throughout the war years, helping to sustain Britain’s food supply during a challenging time.

After the war’s end in 1945, Peggy married her husband Bill and settled in Surrey. Together, they raised a loving family that now extends to three children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Throughout her life, Peggy cultivated a passion for gardening and antiques, even running local antiques fairs during her working years.

Reflecting on her long life, Peggy shared, “I have no idea what the secret to a long life is, but I suspect having a busy and happy family life has kept me young. It’s also important to take every opportunity for new experiences and not to worry too much.”

Andrew Pow, manager of Ivybank House, said, “Though Peggy has only lived with us a short time, she has become a cherished member of our community, fully engaging in life here. We were delighted to celebrate such a wonderful milestone with her.”

Ivybank House, a 43-bed care home in Bath, offers residential, dementia, respite, and day care services, providing a warm and supportive environment for residents like Peggy to thrive.
