Kingswood School in Bath Implements Phone Ban with Innovative Pouches

Kingswood School in Bath has taken a proactive step by implementing a ban on phones through the use of ‘Yondr’ pouches, a first for the city. Students in Year Seven to 11 are required to store their phones in these pouches during school hours, making them unattainable. Despite 77% of the pupils expressing disagreement with the stricter phone regulations, the school’s Co-Head of Middle School, Sarah Herlinger, highlighted the addictive nature of smartphones and the responsibility of the school to alleviate the temptation for students.

While many students objected to the change, the school reported positive feedback from the majority of parents. Additionally, Year 10 pupils Pippa and Ollie shared that the ban has fostered a more social environment and reduced stress levels by eliminating the impulse to engage with their devices.

Despite initial resistance, staff members have observed fewer disruptions during classes and increased social interaction during break times. The library, once a space for screen time, now hosts students engaging in traditional games like Chess and Uno. This cultural shift towards phone-free activities has extended beyond school hours, with students embracing face-to-face socializing and traditional pastimes.
