Kingswood School Expresses Deep Regret Over Historical Abuse Allegations

Kingswood School in Bath has issued a heartfelt statement expressing profound sorrow after a former student came forward with allegations of abuse involving a staff member in the 1990s.

In a letter addressed to alumni on February 2, Headmaster Andrew Gordon-Brown acknowledged the gravity of these allegations and affirmed the school’s commitment to supporting those affected. “We understand that the impact of abuse in childhood and adolescence can be traumatic, lifelong, and life-changing,” he wrote, conveying the school’s deep regret and compassion for survivors.

Andrew emphasized that safeguarding and pastoral care remain the school’s highest priorities. He assured that Kingswood School adheres strictly to protocols and is regularly inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), consistently meeting all child protection standards.

While the school fosters a culture of kindness and compassion, Andrew acknowledged that not every past pupil’s experience reflects this ideal—a reality the school deeply regrets. He encouraged former students impacted by abuse or with relevant information to come forward, offering a listening ear and support.

The full letter reads: “I am writing about an important and sensitive matter, and I would welcome hearing from anyone who has been impacted or has relevant information they wish to share. The school has recently been supporting an Old Kingswoodian who very courageously disclosed a distressing experience of alleged abuse involving a member of staff in the 1990s.

We understand that the impact of abuse in childhood and adolescence can be traumatic, lifelong, and life changing, and we express our deep sorrow, regret, and genuine compassion for those who have suffered as a result of such an experience.

Pastoral care is our single most important priority, and we do all in our power to safeguard our pupils, both present and future. Kingswood School is regularly inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and meets all standards in relation to safeguarding and child protection.

The prevailing culture at the school is one of kindness and compassion but we know that this was not always the experience of all pupils, which is something we deeply regret. With this in mind, we would welcome hearing from anyone who wishes to talk with us or to share their experience of the school. We are here to listen and to support you.”

Both Kingswood School and Avon and Somerset Police have been contacted for comment.
