A major road closure is set to impact Bridgwater town centre for two months as construction of the town’s ambitious ‘Celebration Mile’ project progresses. This exciting new route will connect Bridgwater railway station to the Northgate Docks, offering a safe, attractive corridor for pedestrians and cyclists, benefitting both residents and visitors alike.
With £9 million secured through the Bridgwater town deal, funded by central government, three key sections of the route are currently being developed along Angel Crescent, Clare Street, and Eastover. The next phase requires the closure of the southern part of Church Street from June 2 to July 31. This closure will also affect the eastern end of Eastover near the junction with the A38 Broadway.
During this period, contractor Taylor Woodrow will carry out essential works, including installing new kerb lines and resurfacing pavements to enhance the route’s safety and aesthetics. Access arrangements have been planned carefully; a diversion route will ensure residents of London Court maintain entry through Watsons Way, and exit will remain via Church Street.

Despite these roadworks, public footways will stay open, and businesses will continue operating normally. Additional signage will be placed to reassure visitors and shoppers that Church Street remains accessible throughout the construction.
Councillor Mike Rigby, portfolio holder for economic development, planning, and assets, acknowledged the potential inconvenience but emphasized the importance of the project: “While the closure may cause some disruption, completing this major investment is vital for Bridgwater. We will ensure pedestrians, shoppers, businesses, and residents maintain access, supported by clear signage to highlight that Church Street is still open for business.”
Residents and business owners are invited to a drop-in session to learn more and provide feedback. The event will be held on June 12 from 4 pm to 7 pm at Bridgwater Community Church (11-13 Eastover). Attendees will have the opportunity to meet contractors and councillors, ask questions, and discuss how the project can best be completed.
Following the successful conclusion of the Celebration Mile by late summer, Somerset Council plans to focus on regenerating the Northgate Docks with a £5.2 million investment, also funded by the town deal. In April, the council appointed design consultants WSP, aiming to secure planning permission and start construction before spring 2026 — the deadline for all town deal funding commitments.
