Kevin McCloud Celebrates Somerset Town’s Thriving Independent Spirit and Scenic Beauty

Kevin McCloud, the acclaimed presenter of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, recently shared his admiration for a vibrant Somerset town renowned for its independent shops and steady growth. Having lived in Somerset for nearly 30 years, Kevin spoke warmly about the county’s diverse character and its appeal to creatives and nature lovers alike.

Reflecting on his move to Somerset in the 1980s, Kevin explained that he was drawn to the region’s distinctiveness and affordable studio spaces, which offered a refreshing distance from London’s hustle. Despite the capital being just a few hours away, Kevin appreciated Somerset’s rural tranquility and the slower pace of life that suited his upbringing.

One town he highlighted was Frome, where he once lived with his first wife. Once quieter, Frome has undergone a remarkable transformation marked by revitalization and a blossoming of independent retailers. “Frome’s regeneration has been like a nice, slow casserole,” Kevin remarked. He praised the gradual nature of the town’s development, noting that slow growth often feels more genuine and inclusive compared to rapid, artificial change.

Beyond the towns, Kevin expressed deep affection for Somerset’s natural landscapes. He shared his fondness for The Levels, describing the area as “bleak and magnificent” with its rich birdlife, willow weavers, and farming heritage. He likened it to the Peak District and admired its sense of timelessness, feeling it retains the essence of Somerset as it was in the 1940s. Similarly, the Mendip Hills earned his admiration for their rugged beauty.

Kevin emphasized Somerset’s geographical diversity, noting that each part of the county offers a unique atmosphere and character. Whether it’s the bustling towns or the quiet countryside, Somerset’s variety is a key part of its charm.

His reflections come ahead of Grand Designs Live 2025 in Birmingham, where home and design enthusiasts will gather to celebrate innovation and creativity in living spaces. Kevin’s heartfelt endorsement of Somerset paints a vivid picture of a county that blends heritage with modern vibrancy.
