Ken Loach Slams Bath Stadium Development

Renowned filmmaker Ken Loach has strongly criticized the proposed construction of a large modern sports stadium in the heart of Bath. In reaction to Bath Rugby’s plans to build an 18,000-seater stadium at its current site on the Recreation Ground, Loach has voiced concerns about the negative impact such a development would have on the city’s visual appeal and World Heritage status.

Loach, a resident of Bath, likened the stadium to a “carbuncle on the face of an old friend,” underlining the adverse effects it could have on the cherished visual context of the city. He emphasized the need to protect Bath’s architectural heritage and expressed apprehensions that the proposed development would jeopardize the city’s status as a World Heritage site.

While Bath Rugby has made alterations to the initial plans in an effort to address community feedback and preserve the area’s distinct character, Loach remains unconvinced, stating that the changes were not substantial. On the other hand, Bath Rugby’s chief executive, Tarqiun McDonald, has emphasized the importance of the redevelopment for the club’s long-term future, warning that failure to proceed could raise doubts about their continued presence in the city.

The proposed stadium has caused a divisive debate in the city, with over 5,500 individuals, including Loach, submitting comments on the planning application. The decision on the plans is expected to be made by Bath and North East Somerset Council in September.
