Keep Spiders Out with a Simple Two-Ingredient Peppermint Spray

Spider mating season in the UK typically starts in late August and continues into early September. This period marks the transition from summer to cooler weather and prompts male spiders to search for warm, dry places to mate—often leading them indoors.

While female spiders usually remain stationary, males are more active and likely to creep into homes during this time. To prevent unwelcome eight-legged visitors, many homeowners rely on various strategies such as thorough cleaning, sealing entry points, and keeping doors and windows closed.

A simple, cost-effective solution has recently gained attention on TikTok. User @cleaningwithbeelzebub shared a homemade spider repellent spray made from just two ingredients: water and peppermint essential oil. The recipe calls for mixing one cup of water with 15-20 drops of peppermint oil. Spraying this mixture around entry points—such as windows, door seals, and even artificial plants—can deter spiders while leaving your home smelling fresh.

For hard-to-reach areas, applying peppermint oil with a duster (using 5-10 drops) helps remove cobwebs and repels spiders simultaneously. Peppermint oil is believed to repel spiders because these insects “taste” through their legs and find the scent unpleasant.

However, pet owners should exercise caution. Many essential oils, including peppermint, tea tree, citrus, eucalyptus, lavender, and clove, are toxic to cats and dogs. If your pet comes into contact with these oils, consult your veterinarian immediately.

If you have pets, consider alternative spider deterrents, such as spraying a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water in spider-prone areas. Rubbing lemon peels on windowsills, skirting boards, and shelves can also create a citrus scent that spiders dislike.

Ultimately, limiting entry points by keeping doors and windows closed—especially at night—and maintaining a clean home by removing cobwebs and potential insect food sources will reduce spider visits and keep your living space comfortable and pest-free.
