Keep Spiders Away with This Simple Two-Ingredient Homemade Spray

Spider mating season in the UK usually begins between late August and early September. This period marks the transition from summer to cooler weather, a time when male spiders actively seek warm, dry places to find mates. While female spiders tend to remain stationary, these wandering males often end up inside homes, making sightings more common.

Many people try various methods to deter spiders, such as maintaining cleanliness, sealing windows and doors, and blocking potential entry points. But a simple homemade spray offers a refreshing and effective alternative.

TikTok user @cleaningwithbeelzebub recently shared a two-ingredient spray recipe that’s easy to make at home. It consists of one cup of water mixed with 15-20 drops of peppermint oil. The user recommends spraying this mixture on entry points including windows, door seals, and even artificial plants. Not only does it repel spiders, but it also leaves your home smelling fresh and inviting.

This method also extends to cleaning hard-to-reach spots with a duster dipped in 5-10 drops of peppermint oil, helping to remove and prevent cobwebs.

According to Green Pest Solutions, spiders dislike peppermint oil because they “taste” through their legs, making it a natural and potent repellent. However, pet owners should exercise caution since many essential oils, including peppermint, can be toxic to cats and dogs. If pets come into contact with these oils, immediate veterinary advice is essential.

For pet-friendly alternatives, consider spraying a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water in areas where spiders gather. Rubbing lemon peels on windowsills, skirting boards, and shelves also creates a scent that spiders avoid.

In addition to these sprays, reducing entry points by keeping doors and windows closed—especially at night—is key. Regular cleaning to eliminate cobwebs and removing insects that attract spiders will further discourage their presence.

Implementing these simple, natural solutions can help keep your home spider-free this mating season while maintaining a pleasant and fresh environment.
