Constance Pullom, a remarkable woman who played piano in an RAF band during the Second World War, has celebrated her 105th birthday in Bath. Born in 1921, Constance showed her musical talent early, learning piano at just three years old.
A gifted musician, she earned a scholarship to grammar school before joining the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during the war. Beyond her service, she contributed to the war effort through factory work and entertained as a pianist in an RAF band.
In 1951, Constance married her husband David, and together they lived across England, including Bristol and Bath. Her adventurous spirit led her to act in a travelling theatre company, explore America by Greyhound bus, and even take up motorcycling.

Celebrating her milestone surrounded by friends and family at Ivybank House Care Home, Constance shared her secret to longevity: “I believe the secret to a long life is to ‘keep on keeping on’ and to ‘stay interested in everything’. Keeping active in both mind and body is so important. I still make sure each day brings something new, whether through activities or enjoying the beautiful gardens here.”
Reflecting on the celebration, she added, “It was wonderful to have all those special to me join in, and I’m truly grateful to the caring team at Ivybank House for making the day so memorable.”
Constance’s passion for music endures. She has played piano for choirs in Paulton and Midsomer Norton and continues to play her keyboard every morning at Ivybank House, often delighting others with impromptu renditions of “Happy Birthday,” reminding everyone that “it’s always someone’s birthday somewhere in the world.”
Zendrel Moore, Home Manager at Ivybank House, said, “It has been a privilege to celebrate this incredible milestone with Constance and her loved ones. She is the heart of our community. Her love for life and music brightens every day—her morning piano sessions are a joy, and she always welcomes song requests.”
